Painting and Paint Sample Boards

This page contains:
  • General Information About Paints
  • Processing of Painting and Modge Podging
  • Paint Sample Boards
  • Paints Colors (Step 5 Paint Kits Also)

General Information About Paints

  • All paints that we use MUST BE MATTE FINISH. Gloss and All-Purpose will pull up off the board.
  • Paints are number 1-60.
  • When distributing paints, they will only need about a quarter size drop. We usually put 3 colors on the same plate.
  • Most paints will only take 2 coats. Advise customers to let the first coat go on naturally. There should be no pooling of paints. Let it dry to touch. Start putting on next coat. Repeat until coverage is the way they want.
  • Some like it to look weathered, while others will want it 100% filled in. Either way is fine.
  • Paint colors are made with different pigments. Some just cover better than others. These cover poorly.
    • CAUTION- #10  (Bright Yellow), Oranges, Royal/Navy Blues, Reds and Metallics take more coats than other paints and are very thin paints. These take 3 or more coats usually. The pigment is different than other colors. We always warn customers that these will go on very transparent on the first layer. Do not try and put too much on to get done quicker.
  • You can put on too much paint. You will learn so much about this through experience.
  • When people are done and it is time to remove vinyl, IT IS BEST TO REMOVE WHILE SLIGHTLY MOIST! THERE SHOULD BE NO POOLS OF PAINT. If they have pools of paint, have them get a dry make-up applicator and dab it up.
  • If you get paint some where you don't want it, we keep baby wipes hand to wipe it off.

Processing of Painting and Modge Podging

We will demonstrate in Step 10- The video that shows the process.
  1. Dip the rectangular part of the make-up applicator in the paint or Modge Podge on the plate.
  2. Wipe the excess of the edge.
  3. Then dab onto the open areas of the sign. It is not brush. You are dabbing to push the vinyl down to the wood.
  • CAUTION- TELL GUEST NOT TO BRUSH THE PAINT ON. IF THEY TRY TO PAINT WITH IT LIKE A BRUSH, IT WILL CAUSE BLEEDING.

Paint Sample Boards

As part of your welcome kit, we are shipping you a set of vinyl so you create your paint sample boards. These take a while, but are great practice. They take longer than anything you will do. Remember they are what your customers see as examples so do you best. We should have done better on our first set. They can be created on six 8"x16"pieces of wood. You will need 1 of each stain color. Paint colors 1-30 go on 1 side and 31-60 on the other side. You will learn how to weed, transfer vinyl and paint in Step 10. These will take 3 coats of each paint color to create. These paint sample boards will allow party guests to see how paint colors appear on the different stain colors.

CAUTION- One of the top 3 problems... customers choosing colors that do not contrast enough with their stain color. They are disappointed they can not see what they have painted. Example- Silver on Grey.  ADVISE THEM TO CONSIDER LIGHTING WHERE IT WILL BE HUNG AND THAT THE SIGN WILL BE 10 FEET BACK FROM THEM WHEN IT IS HUNG ON THE WALL.

We recommend you learn the 10 Things to Consider When Designing The Perfect Sign. These are important tips to help customers create a beautiful sign.
